Yeovil Town v Gillingham Capital One Cup Preview

Yeovil Town are back in action at Huish Park this Tuesday evening looking to put right the wrongs of the opening day defeat to Doncaster.

The midweek game sees the Glovers host Gillingham in the first of a double header against the Kent side.

First up this Tuesday, it isn’t league points up for grabs but progression in the Capital One Cup.

The first round fixture takes place at Huish Park kicking off at 7:45pm.

Both sides suffered defeats on the opening day of the league campaign.

Yeovil lost to Doncaster and Gillingham went down 4-2 away at MK Dons.

The Gills were 2-0 up at one point following goals from Cody McDonald and a Danny Kedwell penalty.

Karl Robinson’s men fought back and notched four times to take the points in front of their home support.

The Glovers succumbed to Doncaster Rovers’ attacking prowess and failed to even score in a 3-0 defeat.

Gary Johnson has promised changes for this game, changes that he made have made anyway regardless of Saturday’s result.

Nathan Ralph impressed from the bench, as did James Hayter who came closest to scoring for the home side – both will be hoping to feature from the start this midweek.

Kevin Dawson has joined Joel Grant on the injury list and while Grant is further away from a comeback it’s hoped that Dawson won’t be far away from joining the squad again, but this Tuesday might be a bit of a quick turnaround.

The Gills are managed by former England gaffer Peter Taylor and he could well be without one of his scorers from the weekend.

Cody McDonald suffered a knee injury and Taylor was quoted as saying that a scan would be needed before making a judgement on his potential absence.

The Gills have been as active as any other team during the close season signing a number of players including former Sunderland man John Egan, Luke Norris from Brentford and Josh Pritchard who was released by Fulham.

The two sides will be eyeing each other up as much as trying to progress, the two teams meet again, in a league fixture this weekend.

Saturday’s game is at the Preistfield stadium – tickets for that game are available from the ticket office.

The two teams haven’t crossed paths since the 2009/2010 season.

That year, two Coca Cola League One fixtures saw a 1-0 Gillingham win and a 0-0 draw.

If you add the 0-0 draw from the meeting prior to those, in 2008, you can go through 180 minutes of action between the sides and have just a single Simeon Jackson

penalty to talk about.

You have to go back to November 2007 for a goal from open play and a Yeovil win.

Lloyd Owusu found the net that day, in a 2-1 win at Huish Park.

That match was the fourth in a row of Glovers wins in matches between the two sides.

A run that means that that defeat in 2009 was the only time Gillingham have come out on top in meetings between the sides, in the football league.
