Goalkeeper Chris Weale says he was delighted with the team’s defensive display on Saturday, as the Glovers held on for a point away at Newport County.
The draw at Rodney Parade against the Exiles was the first point away from Huish Park since the 0-0 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park at the start of October, and keeps the Glovers in touching distance with both York City and Saturday’s opponents.
Weale played a big part in the shutout but was happy with the whole team’s efforts in stopping the fellow strugglers from gaining vital points.
Speaking to our official Youtube channel after the game the keeper explained, “I’m pleased to keep a clean sheet, obviously. We defended well, played some good football and created some good chances.
“The second half we were under the cosh a bit, but that’s what you expect away from home.”
On his saves, particularly from Scot Bennett and Scott Barrow, “It’s what I’m here to do. Obviously I am pleased to make saves but as a team collectively it’s great to keep a clean sheet. I am pleased since I have come back in with my performances and enjoying playing my football.”
Since the end of last season, the former Leicester stopper has combined playing duties with coaching the other goalkeepers at the club, gaining a close relationship with fellow first team keeper Artur Krysiak.
Weale has mainly played second fiddle to Krysiak so far this season, but explained that the Pole has been really supportive of him since losing the number one shirt after his sending off in the 1-0 win over Maidstone in the FA Cup.
“I have been really pleased and impressed with his (Artur’s) performances,” explained Weale. “He mentioned himself that he was not happy with some of his games before his sending off but as a goalkeeper you are going to go through those dips 14, 15 games into a 46 game season.”
“But (on the whole) his performances have been up there. He is working hard and his attitude is brilliant and we work well together. He is very supportive of me and I am the same back.”
Having been at the club during the rise into the Football League, Weale is desperate for the team to improve and push up the table with the Glovers sitting just inside the relegation places, but only a point away from the team just outside of the drop-zone, York.
He explained, “No one wants to see the club back in the conference. I will work personally hard as I can to keep Yeovil in the football league, and as you’ve seen in the last few games we are a much better team than what our league position says we are.
“We need to start converting that into results and points. Hopefully a couple months after Christmas, we will be a lot more comfortable and maybe sitting midtable. But in terms of our performances in the last four games it is much more promising.”
