It was an almost identical match to the Boxing Day clash with Exeter City as Town hit the bar in the second period through Otis Khan’s late effort, but couldn’t force a goal in front of the biggest crowd of the calendar year at a foggy Huish Park.
The point moves Yeovil up to 12th in Sky Bet League Two with half the season gone and Way is hopeful his players can find more of a clinical edge in the New Year.
“That was a tough game, make no bones about it,” the Town boss told YTFC’s official YouTube channel.
“One thing my players played with was unbelievable desire and real big heart and I’m proud of that.
“My players gave everything again and I think we just need a bit more lady luck in the final third.
“Some of the players are disappointed we didn’t win the game against a team like Portsmouth with huge resources and I thought we outworked them on the day, and that’s unbelievable as a manager.
“Otis went one on one with the keeper and on another day that goes in and we’re having a different conversation.”
He added: “It is frustrating and that’s why some of the players are disappointed.
“We’re a group that’s developing and it takes a huge responsibility, belief and confidence to be able to stick the ball in the back of the net and that’s the only thing that keeps us out the play-offs.
“They’re going to make mistakes and the mistakes they’re making at the moment are being in the right area at the right time when the ball comes in the six-yard box.
“We have to make sure we keep working on that. Also it’s about being clinical when you get that chance, being confident that when you are on the edge of the box you can shoot and find the back of the net. That’s the only thing we’re lacking.”
Liam Shephard was substituted in the first half due to illness and will be assessed before the trip to Crawley Town on Monday (January, 2nd 2017).
