Yeovil Town manager Darren Way was pleased with the team’s patience in front of goal after their 2-1 win against Crawley in Sky Bet League Two.

The manager watched as his side tried desperately to break the deadlock against Crawley who frustrated the Glovers as numerous dangerous attacks went agonizingly close to opening the scoring in the first half.

But after bringing on Ryan Bird and Tahvon Campbell, Yeovil finally broke the deadlock just three minutes after through the former, before Campbell scored the vital effort with a fine solo effort.

Lee Barnard’s header made it a nervous finish, but Yeovil held on for a crucial three points that meant Way’s side ended the day outside of the drop zone, and the manager was delighted with his side’s attacking threat.

Way explained, “We’ve talked about since I’ve been manager at the football club to get above this line, and you could see the efforts there.

“Some of the play was fantastic; when I first took over, the stats were saying we done well to get over three corners a game. I don’t know what the stats are today, but we must have been plus ten in corners!”

“Crawley came back and made it difficult in the first half, put men behind the ball so we had to break that down, we knew we had to be patient but it was a great performance by the players.”

Way was particularly pleased with his team’s energy on the back of what had been a difficult week in adverse conditions at Morecambe and a two hour long FA Cup Third Round replay against Carlisle that ended with defeat in the dreaded penalty shootout.

He explained, “The players deserve that off the back of the game time they’ve had to play. You’re talking Extra time on Tuesday, and I was really worried about that I won’t lie; I was worried about whether this team can maintain that intensity that they’re playing at, and I thought they did that today.

“They’ve done that on difficult surfaces; they’ve been involved in frost, at Morecambe there was snow, so they’ve really put a shift in and we’ll be making sure to be really working hard to keep this fantastic football club above that line.”

Way’s inspired substitutions broke down a Crawley side intent on frustrating the home side, and the Yeovil boss was pleased with how his team shouldered their responsibilities in front of both goals.

He said “I made the changes and I’ve talked about being clinical in front of goal with the amount of efforts we have and it’s important players shoulder that responsibility because if we don’t, then the club doesn’t get out of the position we are in.

“It’s not too much pressure where I don’t want them to enjoy it, but it is what it is and they have to take that responsibility.

Way added “I think it shows how important it is that when you’re not in the team. They’ve taken us over the line today, as well as everyone else sticking together.

“I said to the lads it’s so important the way you conduct yourself around this football club with the supporters and with the media, because we’re trying to create a winning environment and so far at home we’ve done okay.”

The Yeovil manager paid special tribute to match winner Tahvon Campbell, and is determined to keep the youngster for longer, with his month-long loan from Barclays Premier League side West Bromwich Albion ending soon.

He explained, “I thought Tahvon’s goal, what an individual goal! You talk about being bold and having that arrogance, and that finish was clinical so we’re pleased with that.

“We talk about pressure and opportunities, and he definitely took that. For me he’s done fantastic, he’s a good personality, a great character to have about the place and made a massive contribution to take the club out of the bottom two, so for me it’s a no brainer.”
