James John Plant, born 3 November 2004 in Werrington, Staffordshire, started playing football with Werrington Tigers and later joined Port Vale's academy at under-nine level after a trial with Crewe Alexandra. His elder brother, Matthew, played for non-League side Abbey Hulton United.
Plant made his senior debut for Port Vale in an EFL Trophy game against Stockport County in August 2022. He then had loan spells at Nantwich Town and Salisbury, where he earned praise for his performances, including several man-of-the-match awards. He made his League One debut for Port Vale in April 2023 and scored his first EFL goal later that month against Charlton Athletic.
In April 2023, Plant signed a two-year professional contract with Port Vale, and his strong start to the 2023–24 season earned him a contract extension until 2027. After suffering a shoulder injury, he returned in March 2024, playing out of position but receiving praise for his versatility.
In September 2024, Plant joined Yeovil Town on loan until January 2025. He provided an assist in his second game, a 1–0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge, with manager Mark Cooper praising his quality and versatility.
