Whittle, born in Liverpool, began his career at Liverpool FC, where he spent 11 years before joining the Glenn Hoddle Academy and Nike Academy. He signed a three-year contract with Dunfermline Athletic in 2012, transitioning from winger to left-back and scoring his first goal in 2013.

After leaving Dunfermline in 2015, Whittle had spells at AFC Fylde, Southport, and York City. He joined Forest Green Rovers in 2018, followed by loans to Southport and a move to Warrington Town. Later, he played for Boston United, Gloucester City, and Chesterfield.

In July 2022, Whittle rejoined York City before signing for Yeovil Town in 2023.
