The Glovers rounded off their pre-season in style with a 2-0 victory over Weston-super-Mare. Second-half goals from Aaron Jarvis and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton secured the win.
The first half started slowly, but the Glovers controlled possession. In the 9th minute, they earned their first corner of the game through Brett McGavin, who drilled the ball in from the right, but the official called a foul on James Dodd.
In the 14th minute, Aaron Jarvis had the first effort on target. Jordan Young pressed the Weston defence into a clearance, which was intercepted by Michael Smith. Smith headed the ball to Jarvis, who drove forward and got a shot away, but it was saved by Kelland Absalom.
The right wing seemed to be the preferred route for the Glovers in the opening stages as Frank Nouble progressed down the right before getting a cross in, but it evaded Aaron Jarvis.
As the game approached the 30-minute mark, the Glovers had a flurry of chances as they looked for an opener. Brett McGavin and Jordan Young stood over a free kick from 20 yards out, and it was McGavin who took responsibility with a low effort, which was saved by the feet of Absalom. Less than a minute later, Absalom had to be on high alert again as McGavin drilled a pass into Young, who flicked it into the path of Sam Pearson, but he was denied.
After a drinks break, it was the hosts’ turn to have a sight of goal. In the 35th minute, Luke Coulson made his way down the left wing before cutting back to Ollie Chamberlain, who shot low and wide of Ollie Wright’s goal. Moments later, the same pair produced Weston’s next chance. Coulson, again down the left, found Chamberlain in the box, closer to goal than before, but his effort flew wide of the post.
The final action of the half saw Matt Worthington come close. A cross-field ball was taken down well by Michael Smith, who took the ball around his man before finding Worthington, whose low effort was collected by Kelland Absalom. Before Absalom could clear the ball upfield, the half came to an end, all square.
The Glovers started the second half steadily, with their first chance coming in the 51st minute. Sam Pearson played the ball through to Jordan Young, who set himself before striking low, but his effort was collected by Kelland Absalom.
In the 53rd minute, the only cards of the game appeared as former Glover Reuben Reid and Jake Wannell received yellow cards for a scuffle off the ball.
Aaron Jarvis had a great opportunity to put the Glovers ahead in the 56th minute when Young found him with a through ball. Jarvis drove forward with just Absalom to beat, but his attempted lofted shot was collected by the keeper.
At the other end, Ollie Wright was called into action as Reuben Reid unleashed an effort from range, which he managed to get behind and punch clear from danger.
Just after the hour mark, Mark Cooper made his first change, bringing on Harvey Greenslade to replace Sam Pearson.
The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute as Michael Smith found Aaron Jarvis with a lofted ball. Jarvis brought it down beautifully before drilling it into the far corner, beating Kelland Absalom to make it 1-0.
Even after the goal, the Glovers continued to push forward and look for more. Weston were pinned into their half by the pressing of the frontline before Brett McGavin intercepted a clearance. McGavin set himself on the edge of the area before unleashing an effort wide of Absalom’s goal.
In the 72nd minute, the Glovers’ patient play almost resulted in a beautiful goal. Young, Nouble, and Smith put together a string of short passes around the area before Smith eventually got an effort away, but it was poked wide of the goal.
Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was introduced in the 77th minute to replace Matt Worthington, and moments later, he left his mark on the game. A lofted ball from Jordan Young was brought down well by Lo-Everton, who found himself in a similar position to Jarvis for the opener. He set himself before blasting the ball past Absalom into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.
Following the goal, Mark Cooper made his final changes, bringing on Jordan Thomas and Finn Cousin-Dawson to replace Alex Whittle and Jake Wannell.
As the game entered additional time, Weston had one final chance to make their mark. From a corner, the ball dropped to a trialist who shot over the crossbar of Ollie Wright’s goal.
Moments later, the game was brought to its conclusion with the Glovers recording a win to finish off their pre-season schedule.
