Yeovil Town Women kicked off their season with a strong performance, securing a 2-0 victory over SGS Olveston United in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup First Round Qualifying. Goals from Niamh Nicholls and Becky Miles ensured the Glovers’ progression to the next round.
The game began with Olveston threatening to take an early lead, as Wolfe and Blacker both tested Yeovil’s goalkeeper Emily Hall, who stood firm to deny them.
Yeovil took the lead in the 8th minute when Becky Miles delivered a low cross that Zoe Ball smartly let pass, allowing last season’s top scorer, Niamh Nicholls, to finish with precision and make it 1-0.
Olveston came close to equalising just after the half-hour mark. A long clearance from Morris found Blacker, whose initial shot was saved by Emily Hall before she fired the rebound wide.
Abbie Carslake nearly doubled Yeovil’s advantage just before the break with a cross, but the Olveston keeper managed to gather it.
The second half saw both teams creating opportunities. In the 53rd minute, Katie Evans drove forward and unleashed a shot that went wide of the post. Shortly after, Nicholls had a chance to score her second, following a pass from Chloe Davenport, but her effort also went wide.
Olveston continued to press, with Worlock skilfully weaving through challenges before Jennings cut inside and forced another save from Emily Hall.
The Glovers sealed the win in injury time when Becky Miles struck a free kick past Morris and into the back of the net, making it 2-0.
With the victory secured, Yeovil Town Women advanced in the Adobe FA Cup and will face Pucklechurch Sports at home on Sunday, 22nd September.
