Yeovil Town Women edged closer to the league title on Sunday as they beat Paulton Rovers Reserves by five goals to nil. A first half hat-trick by in-form midfielder Becky Miles, as well as goals from Abbie Carslake and Zoe Ball ensured that Yeovil remained top of the tree with two games in hand.
Paul Knight made one change to the team which beat Nailsea last time out, as Jess Gold replaced Phoebe Whalley in the starting eleven.
Yeovil found it difficult to breakdown a physical Paulton team in the early exchanges, with Miles’ attempt from distance being one of few chances in the opening thirty minutes. The incredibly windy conditions also did not work in the Glovers’ favour.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 36th minute. Following a drop ball, midfielder Miles drove forward, beating two players in the process and finishing across the goalkeeper into the far corner to give Yeovil the lead.
After opening the scoring seven minutes earlier, Miles made it two for Yeovil, as a well worked team goal was finished off calmly by the midfielder in form.
On the stroke of half-time Miles completed her nine-minute hat trick, as she cut in and dispatched her effort from a tight angle.
After a well fought first half in windy conditions, Yeovil went in at the break 3-0 up, courtesy of a late treble from Becky Miles.
Yeovil controlled the early stages of the second half and were rewarded for their pressure with a penalty, as Chloe Perham was brought down in the box. The Glovers’ penalty woes continued as Carslake struck the post with her spot-kick.
Yeovil had their fourth in the 77th minute as Carslake made amends and struck the ball into the top of the net from twenty-five yards. This ensured that she has now scored in each of Yeovil’s last four fixtures and entered double figures for the season.
Swiftly after this Yeovil made it five, as Miles’ intelligent pass found Ball, who rounded the goalkeeper and finished into an empty net. Ball has now scored in each of her last three appearances for the Glovers.
After a very impressive second half display, in which Paul Knight’s side did not concede a shot on goal, the match finished 5-0, as Yeovil made even more progress towards winning the league title.
The player of the match was awarded to Becky Miles for a complete performance in midfield which included three goals and an assist. Manager Paul Knight was also keen to praise Yeovil’s younger players Zoe Ball and Jess Gold for their performances.
