The Glovers continued their pre-season exactly as they started, recording a consecutive 5-1 victory, this time against Frome Town.
The opening stages felt like the early minutes of a cup game as Frome matched the energy that the Glovers were exerting. However, after 6 minutes, the Glovers had their first glimpse at goal when Dylan Morgan brought the ball down on the edge of the box before shooting just over the crossbar.
Dylan Morgan then provided the next chance as Morgan Williams rose highest following a corner but was unable to steer his headed effort on target. After 10 minutes, it was Frome who had their own chance from a corner. After being drilled in from the left, it was Teale who managed to get his head to the ball, but it was over the bar.
Corners seemed to be the story of the match so far, and one was directly involved as the Glovers took the lead after 13 minutes. Dylan Morgan curled his set piece from the left, which caught Phillips off guard as it crept in at the front post. A spectacular way for Morgan to find his second of the pre-season campaign and make it 1-0.
Dylan Morgan continued to make himself a nuisance to the Frome Town defence as moments later, his free kick was punched clear by Phillips but only as far as Matt Worthington, whose tame effort was collected by the keeper.
Morgan was in the thick of the action again when, after 20 minutes, the Glovers doubled their lead. Dylan Morgan went from chance creator to chance provider as he placed the ball through to Sam Pearson, who set himself before calmly slotting the ball into the net.
Two became three on the verge of half-time when Harvey Greenslade, who had caused issues with his pace throughout the first half, capitalised on a weak defensive back pass to bear down on goal and strike low into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after 40 minutes.
The final 5 minutes were dominated by the Glovers, who pressed for a fourth. Matt Worthington almost put Harvey Greenslade in prime position to grab his second, but his clipped pass ran down the Badgers Hill slope and into the hands of Phillips. Dylan Morgan also caused problems from a corner as another in-swinging set piece had to be scrambled away by Phillips before Matt Worthington’s effort was blocked.
The fourth did arrive as almost the last kick of the half. Patient build-up between Trialist and Frank Nouble down the right allowed Harvey Greenslade space inside the area to roll the ball into the path of Dylan Morgan to find the far corner.
The second half saw an almost new-look Glovers side with 8 changes being made during the break.
Despite these changes, the Glovers got off to a very strong start as Jordan Young used his fresh legs to cause Frome issues down the left wing before firing a low effort across goal which was well saved by Phillips. The ball then rolled into the path of Sam Pearson for the rebound, but his shot was miraculously blocked on the line.
After 51 minutes, Jordan Young rolled the ball through to Aaron Jarvis on the edge of the area before shooting, but his effort went over the crossbar.
The dominant Glovers continued to press forward with constant attacks. After 59 minutes, Sam Pearson played the ball across the six-yard box and found Aaron Jarvis’s outstretched boot, but his effort was matched by Phillips, who pulled off a fantastic save. The resulting save actually injured the Frome keeper, who was then replaced.
After 66 minutes, Dylan Morgan came the closest he would get to completing his hat-trick. Sam Pearson played the ball into the path of Morgan, who drove into the area before shooting, but his effort was cleared away.
Mark Cooper made a couple of changes with 20 minutes left on the clock as Dylan Morgan and Sam Pearson were replaced by Corey Koerner and a trialist.
Moments later, Aaron Jarvis came close again to getting on the scoresheet. After patient build-up play, Jarvis found himself in a position to shoot as he tried to curl towards the far corner, but it was saved by the replacement goalkeeper.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Frome had the opportunity to get a goal back as Finn Cousin-Dawson fouled in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Ross Staley for the hosts, who put it just out of reach of Matt Gould to make it 4-1.
Mark Cooper’s final change came in the 80th minute when Morgan Williams was replaced by another academy player, Josh Ansell.
The Glovers rounded off their scoring with a couple of minutes left on the clock as Alex Whittle flicked the ball up, gifting Aaron Jarvis the opportunity to challenge the keeper in the air. He managed to win the aerial duel to head the ball into the now-empty net, making it 5-1.
Moments later, the referee brought an end to proceedings, marking the Glovers’ second 5-1 win of the week.
