Yeovil Town Ladies will be moving home for the 2016 season, with the announcement that Huish Park will host FA WSL games in the fast approaching season.
With the Lady Glovers attendances on the up and finishing the previous 2015 campaign with the highest average attendance in the whole of the division, the announcement of playing at the Huish Park is a mark of how seriously Yeovil Town Ladies are taking this year, as they aim for promotion to FA Women’s Super League one.
With manager Jamie Sherwood assembling a strong squad of players and with the excellent facilities on offer at Huish Park, it is felt there is a real opportunity to gain a place in the promised land of WSL1, where the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea compete.
In the last two seasons, Sherborne Town FC (aka Raleigh Grove) has been an excellent home and primary ground to Yeovil Town Ladies, which recorded an attendance of 522 against Continental Tyres Cup opponents and fellow south west side Bristol Academy, which was on the same day as the Yeovil mens team entertained League one side Bristol City. Whilst playing at a ground which once saw Championship football is an exciting one, it will come with a degree of sadness that The Jones Stadium in Sherborne, will now be the clubs secondary ground and play host to occasional games.
With attendances of 722 against Millwall Lionesses and 534 against Everton Ladies, both of which were Women’s Super League matches held at Huish Park in the 2015 season, it shows that there is certainly an appetite for the female game and the atmosphere at those games, showed that Huish Park can certainly cater for the friendly family feel, that the club works so hard at trying to achieve.
With a SSE FA Women’s Cup third round match scheduled for Sunday 7th February, followed by a fourth round match if successful on Sunday 28th February, these ties, if drawn at home, will be held at the Sherborne ground. The Women’s Super League season then kicks off in March, which will see future games switched to Huish Park.
Admission prices for the upcoming season have been increased by just £1.00 per adult, meaning entry to a game is £5.00, whilst concessions prices have been kept the same at £2.50 per game, providing tickets are purchased on line and in advance.
Playing at Huish Park, will also give greater experiences to fans, with pre-match children’s coaching sessions in the final stages of planning, along with pre-match and half time food packages and corporate events due to be announced soon.
Speaking about this club news, Ladies Chairman Steve Allinson said “Firstly, I must express our great thanks to Sherborne Town FC for the support they have shown us over recent years and for hosting our first two seasons in the Women’s Super League.”
“With our ambition to become a WSL one side, Sherborne Town FC does not currently meet the ground criteria required for the top tier of women’s football as set out by The Football Association and, at our current development stage as a club, moving to Huish Park is a step that we feel is important for us”
“It is an exciting time to be involved with Yeovil Town Ladies FC and we hope that football fans from across the region will attend Huish Park in great numbers and to keep our ever increasing attendances on the upward spiral, in what will be an exciting season.”
“Thanks must also go to Yeovil Town FC Chairman John Fry and his board of directors and staff for all their help in the planning stages and support that they have showed us. We look forward to a very mutually beneficial working relationship with them, as we strive to increase our fan engagement and customer service even more.”
"In addition, I would like to express my personal thanks on behalf of the Club to our main sponsors, Jones Building Group, who are also the main sponsor of the Yeovil men’s team. Their support has been instrumental in making these exciting developments come to fruition.”
John Fry, Chairman of Yeovil Town Football Club commented and said “This is exciting news for our Ladies Football Club to be returning to Huish Park during 2016. It makes a compelling brand proposition, with a strong sense of success at Huish Park with our Football League, Academy and Community operations, which can only increase the identity of the Yeovil Town brand, nationally and internationally”
