The 36-year-old, who arrived as a free agent following a six-year stay with League One outfit Gillingham, will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s league encounter with Carlisle United at Huish Park (3pm).
After Polish stopper Artur Krysiak was ruled out for the season last week, goalkeeper coach Steve Phillips was promoted to the bench for Yeovil’s outings against Barnet and Stevenage.
Keen to fully restore Phillips to his coaching duties, Way swooped to secure Nelson’s services on a deal until the end of the season.
In a straight shootout for a starting spot with Jonny Maddison, Town’s boss is pleased to have created competition.
“If you ask the players from what they’ve seen over the last three days in training, he’s been very impressive,” Way told iFollow Glovers.
“That’s no pressure on Jonny. If Jonny plays well, Jonny holds the shirt but if Jonny doesn’t, like any other player you’ve got to decide to make a change.”
With over 400 EFL appearances to his name, Nelson returns to the South West having been born in Stroud.
Linking up with his new team-mates on Tuesday, Way is excited to have secured the ‘keeper’s services.
“It’s a great move for the football club having someone as experienced as that in the dressing room and he comes highly recommended, not just by managers and players, but supporters as well.
“All the people I’ve spoken to, he comes with a high calibre and high class and I’m excited to be able to work with him.”
