Another weekend is nearly upon us and so another chapter of Yeovil Town’s Championship story is set to unfold with the visit of Derby County to Huish Park.
Derby are the fourth league opponent the Glovers have faced at this level and the third of them to have once graced the Premier League.
County’s history is pretty much as decorated as any other in the division; founder members of the football league in 1888, FA Cup winners in 1946 as well as three titles of England’s top tier.
The Rams also have their own trophy, the Brian Clough trophy played awarded to the winning side each time they play fierce rivals Nottingham Forest.
But enough about them, what about Yeovil?
Yeovil have yet another goalkeeper – I can’t find any examples of a side that have played four ‘keepers in four games before – Wayne Hennessey has finally arranged his loan deal following an injury scare.
The Welsh stopper comes in as replacement for Sam Johnstone who was the emergency cover for Marek Stech.
Johnstone’s debut for the Glovers last weekend may turn out to be his only appearance for the club, he damaged a finger in the warm up of the 2-0 defeat against Burnley and has returned to Manchester United.
With Goalkeepers coming and going, Gary Johnson has moved to secure some cover in the form of ex-Coventry goalkeeper Chris Dunn – he’ll be the man to step in if the curse of Glovers’ Glove-men should strike again.
The other man who could make his home debut is Joe Ralls who has joined from Cardiff, he got a few minutes last week and could be set for a more prominent role.
Yeovil are trying to turn around a mini blip in form, decent performances against Birmingham and Burnley have not returned any points and it’s hoped a return to Huish Park will help change fortunes.
Some of the fringe players got another chance to impress in a friendly against Exeter in midweek, more goals for Kieffer Moore and Michael Ngoo staked their claim for a position. The Glovers ran out 3-2 victors.
The Rams are also going into this game on the back of a league defeat, a 1-0 reverse against rivals Leicester City have followed a couple of wins and a draw so far this season.
It has left them 12th in the table on four points six places above Yeovil.
The other win was in the Capital One cup, Gary Johnson will have had no trouble asking for some hints and tips as it was against his son’s Oldham side.
The Glovers will be wary of striker Chris Martin who already has a couple of league goals to his name as well as England Under 21’s star Will Hughes – who is being linked with many Premier League sides in the national press.
Paddy Madden will know two of the visiting squad, Jeff Hendrick and Connor Sammon, from his recent call up to the international scene with the Republic of Ireland.
Time to dust off the history books and much like the Burnley game, Yeovil and Derby have never met competitively, but there is one recent friendly in 2009, when a Steve Davis double saw off a Glovers side including Alex McCarthy and Steven Caulker. Sam Williams missed a penalty.
Away fans are once again close to selling out their end for Saturday and the home side are hoping for a good turn out to match it, tickets are still available – the ticket office can be contacted on (01935) 847888.
