Yeovil Town’s defensive partnership Lee Collins and Luke Wilkinson are building from the back in more ways than one, signing contract extensions for an extra year with no additional financial incentives, protecting your clubs’ future.

Collins and Wilkinson both enjoyed successful debut seasons for the Glovers with Wilkinson even featuring the Non-League Paper’s team of the season.

These extensions highlight the club’s the club’s motto; ‘Achieve by Unity’ more than ever, with the foundations of any team being the central defensive pairing, their example showcases what this crop of players feels about Yeovil Town F.C.

Desperate to remain at the club and lead this club back into the Football League, both defenders committed to the club with no additional financial incentives.

Club captain Collins, settled into his role as the prevailing voice amongst players in the dressing room expertly, producing commanding performances on a weekly basis.

On leading by example, Collins said: “I love being captain, it doesn’t make me any different to the rest of the boys, I’ve just have to maintain standards 24/7.

“I’ve been captain at my last four, maybe five clubs so it’s not new to me, I know what comes with this responsibility. There’s a lot of leaders in that dressing room alongside me so I’m not alone.”

There were many stand-out moments for the Glovers last season, and nobody was more involved in them than Luke Wilkinson. From donning the goalkeeper gloves at Solihull away, to scoring a sumptuous free kick against Wrexham at Huish Park.

On the importance of his starting defenders, manager Darren Sarll said; “They’re the bedrock of our football team. They’re two hugely important players.

“The real pride for me as their employer is that they wanted to be here, especially as there’s no financial gain in that extension. They just wanted to spend more time at Yeovil, that is unbelievably rare in this day and age.

“As long as their performances stay up there, they’re going to be the heartbeat of this football team.”  

Collins, who began his career in the Wolves academy, has achieved one promotion in his career with Hereford in 2008 and will be vying for his second with Yeovil in the upcoming National League season.

It’s a similar story for Wilkinson whose sole promotion was in the division below with Dartford in 2012, on the thought of leading Yeovil to promotion the central defender stated it would be the ‘highlight of his football career.’
