The next ‘Memory Lanes’ Q&A is with Mickey Engwell. It’s taking place this Saturday before the Southend game.
Similarly to the Jamie McAllister Q&A, this will take place in the Alec Stock Lounge at approx 1:30pm.
Mickey began his career at Southend United, progressing through the club’s academy, making nine Football League appearances for the club, scoring three times before moving onto Crewe Alexandra in 1986. At Crewe, Mickey made two league appearances, departing the club at the end of the season, subsequently signing for Chelmsford City.
Following his spell at Chelmsford, Micket played for Barking, Harrow Borough, Enfield and Grays Athletic, before signing for Yeovil in 1995, reuniting with former Enfield manager Graham Roberts.
At his time with the club, Mickey made 114 appearances in all competitions over the course of his three seasons with us, helping the club win the ICIS league and promotion back to the Conference in the 1997-98 season.
At his time with the Glovers, Mickey established himself as a crowd favourite with his never say die attitude and his commitment to the club. For the 8000 plus who were there that memorable night against Enfield in March 1997, and the 2000 locked out, no one will ever forget his goal after four minutes to send Huish Park wild. And Mickey, we know it was a shot not a cross!
At his time with us over three seasons, Mickey played 114 times for The Glovers, scoring 5 goals. Leaving us in March 1998. When Mickey signed for Chesham United, his qualities as an attacking full back were missed.
Still when we think back to that ICIS winning team as fans, one name will always be mentioned, that of Mickey Engwell.
