29th July 2014

So the summer is almost over and Yeovil Town are back in action in just a couple of weeks time.

With pre-season friendlies, the new kit reveal and Gary Johnson announcing that Yeovil is the place he wants to be, relegation from the SkyBet Championship will not stop us Town fans being excited for the 2014/15 campaign.

It has been a fantastic summer for the beautiful game with the World Cup delivering all we could hope for, except maybe England progressing a bit further.

It had goals, the story of the underdog in Costa Rica and controversy, where else would you be able to bite a fellow competitor and still secure a 75 million pound move to Barcelona? It is fair to say the nation were hooked and when hosts Brazil got taught a lesson by Germany, it is one of those sporting moments where we will all remember where we were!

As the World Cup came to a close, the football fix we all needed was very much alive with the transfer market being as gripping as ever, here are my top transfers of the summer:

LUIS SUAREZ – LIVERPOOL  TO BARCELONA -£75 million

ALEXIS SANCHEZ – BARCELONA TO ARSENAL – £35 million

DIEGO COSTA – ATHLETICO MADRID TO CHELSEA – £32 million

ADAM LALLANA – SOUTHAMPTON TO LIVERPOOL – £23 million

ROSS MCCORMACK – LEEDS UTD TO FULHAM – £11 million

Who could forget the multi million pound move to Yeovil for…okay so those words are never to be uttered around Huish Park but we wouldn’t change that for the world and it certainly has been a busy summer for Gary Johnson.

The arrival of no less than nine new faces all ready for pre-season has been a welcome change for fans and already it does not seem like such a new team. Here are my ones to watch for the new season:

AJ Leitch-Smith – A relatively unknown striker in League One following a career at Crewe but is already making a name for himself as pre-season top scorer. He has the potential to make for fans favourite and will be causing defences all sorts of problems.

Jakub Sokolik – Dominating centre halves have been important for Yeovil Town over the last two years and we have certainly been spoilt with the likes of Byron Webster, Dan Burn and Shane Duffy. Having beaten Phil Brown to his signature, it is already easy to see why Gary was keen to snap him up. He is an aerial threat and is domineering in his position, he will be important for Yeovil this season.

Joe Edwards – So he may not be a new addition, in fact Town fans know him extremely well, but he is going to be one to watch in League One. Some may say it is because he has always been my favourite player but I know I am not that bias! Joe was one of the stand out performers in the Championship and “Mr Versatile” made his centre mid spot his own. Having captained the side throughout pre-season, this is the year that could get him noticed by all, although selfishly I hope not too much!

So, as we all look forward to the start of the season, I also cannot wait to share my football views with you every week, I hope you enjoy my blog and I am sure I will be mentioning some great results for Yeovil Town.
