Saturday 6th September | Enterprise National League | Huish Park
The visitors established a two-goal cushion before the break through Ollie Pearce and Ollie Banks, and although Luke McCormick gave the Glovers hope of a comeback midway through the second half, York restored their advantage late on to leave Somerset with all three points.
Dryden named an unchanged starting XI from the side that earned a first away victory of the season at Solihull Moors in midweek.
York began on the front foot, looking to move the ball quickly and pin Yeovil inside their own half. Yet it was the Glovers who created the first clear opening in the sixth minute. Josh Sims climbed well to flick a header into the path of Junior Morias, who drove to the edge of the penalty area before seeing his shot blocked. Moments later, Brett McGavin went close from a wide free-kick, his ambitious 30-yard effort curling just beyond the post.
The visitors responded strongly, with Jed Ward denying Pearce from close range on 13 minutes. But York’s pressure soon told when Pearce converted from the penalty spot midway through the half. Ten minutes later, Banks doubled their lead, latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the area and rifling past Ward.
Yeovil’s best chance of the half came just before the interval when Sims beat his marker down the right and slipped McCormick through on goal, only for goalkeeper Harrison Male to smother before the midfielder could finish.
Half-Time: Yeovil Town 0-2 York City
The visitors continued to threaten after the restart, with Alex Hunt striking narrowly wide six minutes into the half. Dryden responded by introducing Tahvon Campbell for James Plant, which saw Sims switch to wing-back as Yeovil looked to add more attacking impetus.
The Glovers grew into the contest, and with Aaron Jarvis and Ben Wodskou introduced on 68 minutes, their forward line was further refreshed. York almost extended their lead immediately, as Pearce curled just over, but Yeovil’s pressure was beginning to tell.
McCormick seized the opportunity to halve the deficit in the 77th minute, pouncing on a misplaced pass from Male and finishing calmly to lift Huish Park.
With momentum building, Yeovil pressed for an equaliser, pushing York deeper into their own half. But as the Glovers committed numbers forward, they were caught out. Substitute Joe Felix went close on the break, before the decisive moment came on 83 minutes when Jake Wannell, under pressure, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to restore York’s two-goal cushion.
Despite late endeavour, there was no way back, as the Minstermen left Somerset with the points and Yeovil were left to reflect on a costly first-half performance.
