Our 3UP campaign – urging the EFL to Put Football First and finally grant a long-overdue third promotion spot – has grown from a simple idea into a national campaign. Since we launched in February, the message has been clear: three up, three down isn’t just logical, it’s fair, and now is the time.
On Saturday, we’ll stage our 3UP Day of Action across the Enterprise National League. Each game will kick off at 3.03pm, three minutes late. You might find yourself wondering, “Why are we waiting?” – and that’s exactly the question National League clubs have been asking for 23 years, ever since we were granted a second promotion place back in 2002.
The call for change is now backed by our 72 National League clubs and, this weekend, joined by the Trident Leagues too – meaning over 230 clubs across the country will be standing together to call for a fairer system. That solidarity speaks volumes about what this campaign represents: ambition, opportunity, and a shared belief that success should be earned on the pitch.
Fans want it too. A Football Supporters’ Association study showed that 93% of supporters across the pyramid – including many from EFL clubs – back the introduction of a third promotion place. What other topic has such a consensus among football fans? That’s an extraordinary level of agreement in today’s game, and it shows this isn’t just a National League issue.
The case for 3UP goes beyond numbers or rules. It’s about the health of the pyramid – the lifeblood of English football.
Clubs in the National League are professional, ambitious, and deeply rooted in their communities. They’ve built stadiums, academies, and fanbases that reflect the strength of our game at this level. Many are as well-run and as well-supported as those above them – but their path is restricted.
3UP isn’t about special treatment. It’s about equal treatment. It’s about ensuring that every club, from the grassroots to the top, knows that success will be rewarded. The football pyramid has always been built on aspiration – on the idea that if you do things right, you can climb. That’s what makes our system admired around the world. But when that climb becomes blocked, the whole structure suffers.
So this is our ask to the EFL: hear our plea, and look forward, not back. Football evolves, and the pyramid must evolve with it. Put 3UP on the agenda.
As fans, you can play your part too. Our 3UP toolkit gives you the ammunition to show your colours, spread the message, fly the flag for change. And I would urge you to sign our petition, to show the scale of support for change. Every post, every voice, every signature matters.
Three minutes. Three promotion places. It’s time to finish what was started all those years ago.
Don’t forget to sign the petition. Show the strength of support and that you’re right behind 3UP and what it stands for.
