Tuesday 30th September | Enterprise National League | The VBS Community Stadium

Goals from Andrew Oluwabori and Aaron Jarvis sandwiched Charlie Bell’s strike to ensure Richard Dryden’s men left with points in the bag.

For the third straight game, Richard Dryden put his faith in the same starting XI, and again it was the opposition who showed early intentions. Inside the first minute, Jayden Harris broke down the right wing and fired a cross into the middle of the area, which Jed Ward had to tip over his own crossbar.

Then the cogs started turning in attack for Yeovil when Junior Morias cut inside from the left, bounced a pass off Tahvon Campbell, and shot – but his tame effort never troubled David Aziaya, who replaced Jack Sims after he picked up a knock in the warm-up. Andrew Oluwabori will have felt he should have put the Glovers ahead after eight minutes when he broke clear and found Luke McCormick. McCormick cut the ball back across the area, where it fell to the feet of Oluwabori, but he fired straight at the replacement keeper.

The Glovers kept knocking but were unable to trouble Aziaya again until midway through the first half. Patient build-up play saw the ball eventually find Luke McCormick, who found space to shoot from the edge of the area, but his effort rattled off the crossbar of Aziaya’s goal.

Following that chance, Sutton began to enjoy a spell of attacks themselves. Lewis Simper seemed to be at the heart of most of them, with a free kick and a curling effort both comfortably collected by Jed Ward in the Yeovil goal. Ashley Nadesan really should have put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute when a low ball across the goal found him unmarked, but somehow Ward scrambled across and made an incredible block.

Simper had two more bites at the cherry as half time approached. The first was a loose ball in the box which he managed to swipe at, but it flew wide. The next fell to him just outside the area following a cleared cross, but his effort sailed well over Ward’s bar.

Yeovil had the final notable chance of the half through a Luke McCormick free kick. The midfielder took aim from distance, but his shot cleared Aziaya’s crossbar.

Half Time: Sutton United 0-0 Yeovil Town

A change at the break saw Aaron Jarvis replace Tahvon Campbell in what looked like a routine swap at the top end of the pitch.

Ward was called into action quickly after the restart when Ashley Nadesan broke into the box on the right and fired low towards goal, but the Bristol Rovers loanee matched it with a strong save.

Oluwabori had a lively first half down the right wing, and he picked up where he left off. Breaking forward with the ball, he threaded it through to Jarvis. The pass was slightly overhit, but Jarvis managed to regain control and clip the ball back in towards Oluwabori, who glanced his header wide of the far post.

It wasn’t long before Oluwabori got his birthday gift in the form of a goal. The deadlock was broken in the 51st minute when Ward’s free kick was hit long into the Sutton half. Oluwabori gambled on a flick-on, broke into the penalty area, and blasted a low effort past Aziaya. The young loanee wheeled away in celebration towards the 188 travelling Glovers who had made the trip to the capital.

The game plateaued slightly before James Plant had to block an oncoming Sutton attack inside his own area. At the other end, Josh Sims danced past a number of Sutton players before rolling the ball into the path of Morias, whose shot was blocked.

The second change for the Glovers came in the 61st minute as Morias was replaced by Harvey Greenslade to freshen up the attack. Just seconds later, Finn Cousin-Dawson entered the book after bundling his man over on the edge of the Yeovil penalty area. The resulting free kick flew over the crossbar.

After his booking, Cousin-Dawson was replaced by Brett McGavin to add fresh legs in midfield.

The hosts found their way back into the game with just under 20 minutes left. An onslaught of crosses into the area could not be cleared by the Yeovil defence before the ball fell to young Charlie Bell, who curled a superb effort into the far corner, clipping the crossbar on the way in to make it 1-1.

Brandon Njoku nearly flipped the game on its head in the 75th minute when a pinpoint cross from the left found him at the front post, but he glanced his header over. As the clock ticked into the final 10 minutes, the game swung back in Yeovil’s favour.

A corner from the left dropped to Jake Wannell, who cut the ball back to Josh Sims. Sims looked to loft the ball into the area, but it struck the arm of Will Tizzard, with the referee pointing to the spot. Up stepped Aaron Jarvis, still looking for his first goal of the season. He confidently sent Aziaya the wrong way to put the Glovers back in front with just under 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

The final stages were tense, but just like on Saturday, the Glovers held firm and looked resolute despite increased Sutton pressure. One final change from Dryden saw Ben Wodskou replace the hardworking Oluwabori. Eight additional minutes were played, with the biggest chance falling to McGavin, who fired over from distance. Eventually, the full-time whistle sounded, marking another three points and lifting the Glovers up to 8th in the table.
