The Glovers, who have won their first three pre-season games, got out to a two-goal lead within the first half hour of the tie, with Josh Sims and Harvey Greenslade finding the net after 26 and 29 minutes respectively.

Yeovil’s two-goal cushion didn’t last for long, however, as Mannie Barton reduced the lead by half after 30 minutes.

Trey George put the Bluebirds level after 61 minutes, before Morgan Wigley came up with a late winner for the South Wales outfit in the 90th minute.

It was a cagey start to the first half, with both sides settling into the game and not troubling either defence for the opening few minutes of the game.

The game’s first chance fell Yeovil’s way after five minutes when Trialist ran onto a loose ball and tried to curl a shot into the far corner with his left foot. His attempt was easily caught by Cardiff City captain Matt Turner.

Seven minutes later, the Glovers had another chance to take an early lead when Greenslade travelled into the Cardiff penalty area at speed, but his strike flew high and wide.

After 20 minutes, Greenslade was presented with another opportunity to put the Glovers in front, when standing on the edge of the penalty area, Brett McGavin’s corner was cleared into his path.

With a flurry of players in front of him, the 21-year-old struck the ball powerfully at the middle of the goal, but saw the attempt blocked.

Town didn’t have to wait long to take the lead, however, as Josh Sims was able to convert a one-on-one opportunity with Turner, after noticing a Cardiff defender’s slow reaction to a flick on from Aaron Jarvis, and stealing the ball off of him.

All Sims had to do was beat Turner, and he put the Glovers in front by blasting an attempt above the Cardiff goalkeeper, and into the net after 26 minutes.

Three minutes later, Yeovil managed to double their lead when Greenslade cooly placed a low shot into the corner of the net from close range.

It wasn’t long before Cardiff had pulled a goal back, however, as Mannie Barton caught the Town defence off guard, running onto a ball by Isaac Jefferies with pace and slotting past Aiden Stone on the half-hour mark.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 2-1 Cardiff City

Yeovil resumed their control of the match as the second half began, creating a number of half-chances but not being able to add to their lead.

The best of which fell on the hour mark when Brett McGavin slid to strike a ball inside the penalty box. The midfielder managed to push to ball goalwards, but was denied by a late lunge from Alyas Debono, with the Cardiff defender putting his body in front of the ball at the last second.

A minute later, Town were pegged back level as George was given enough time to manoeuvre around the box and fire past Stone.

With their second goal the visitors began to enjoy an added spell of possesion, with George having the chance to grab his second and put Cardiff in front after 78 minutes.

The attacking midfielder couldn’t beat Stone for the second time, however, with the goalkeeper moving across to his left to stop the shot and keep the score level.

As the game ticked into the final minute of regular time, it looked like the score was set to end two goals apiece, but Wigley was able to secure a late victory for the visitors with a goal at the death.
